House Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) responded to reports alleging he supported North Carolina’s state legislature allocating electors to Donald Trump before votes are fully counted, stating his comments were “taken out of context.” This controversy emerged following a Republican event where Harris, referencing hurricane-impacted western North Carolina counties, suggested it “makes a lot of sense” to address potential voter disenfranchisement due to the storm.
In a statement Friday, Harris clarified his remarks as “theoretical” and reiterated his stance that “every legal vote should be counted.” North Carolina’s current laws do not allow pre-emptive allocation of electors by the legislature, and such an act could conflict with the federal Electoral Count Act. Meanwhile, bipartisan efforts are underway in North Carolina to increase voter access in affected counties, with local measures to ensure ballot availability and early voting.
Vice President Kamala Harris responded, emphasizing the need for leaders who uphold free and fair elections, saying that democratic processes “should not be manipulated by elected leaders.”
