France has summoned U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner after he wrote a letter to President Emmanuel Macron alleging France has not done enough to combat antisemitism. The French Foreign Ministry said Sunday the remarks were “unacceptable” and violated international norms against interfering in another country’s internal affairs.

Kushner, a real estate developer and father-in-law of Ivanka Trump, was pardoned by Donald Trump during his first term. The White House has not commented, but the State Department defended Kushner, saying he was “doing a great job advancing our national interests.”

The ministry insisted French authorities are “fully mobilized” against rising antisemitic acts since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. It added the ambassador’s claims undermined “the quality of the transatlantic partnership.”

The incident comes amid broader U.S.-France tensions over Trump’s trade policies and disagreements on U.N. peacekeeping in Lebanon. France also recently rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s accusation that its consideration of recognizing a Palestinian state was fueling antisemitism.

France hosts Western Europe’s largest Jewish community, estimated at about 500,000.
