A mass shooting early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island left four people dead and at least 20 others injured, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived to find multiple victims and large crowds fleeing for safety into nearby businesses and homes.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to nearby properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement on X, calling the event “a tragic and difficult incident.” Four of the wounded remain in critical condition at local hospitals.
Authorities have not released the victims’ names or provided details about possible suspects. Investigators were still processing the scene Sunday afternoon.
U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said she was “completely heartbroken” by the attack, offering prayers for victims and families affected by what she called “a horrific act of violence.”
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information or video footage from the area to come forward as the investigation continues.
