Miles Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official who once wrote anonymously about internal opposition to Donald Trump, accused the administration Tuesday of staging a “false flag” operation with its troop deployments to U.S. cities.
Taylor, who served as deputy chief of staff at DHS, wrote on X, “He’s not trying to stop ‘left-wing’ terrorism. He is staging it… His troop deployments are a false flag — meant to provoke a response to justify harsh crackdowns.”
The allegation follows Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to several Democratic-led states, including California, Oregon, and Illinois, despite objections from the governors. Federal judges have temporarily blocked the deployments in Oregon and Illinois.
Trump has also suggested invoking the Insurrection Act, calling unrest in Portland “an insurrection.” During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi declined to say whether she had discussed the legality of the deployments with Trump.
Taylor previously authored a New York Times op-ed and a book under the pseudonym “Anonymous,” describing efforts within the Trump administration to restrain the president’s actions.
