Robert Preston Morris, the former pastor of Gateway Church, has been indicted in Oklahoma on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child, the state attorney general’s office announced Wednesday.

The alleged abuse began in 1982, when the victim, Cindy Clemishire, was 12 years old, and continued for four years while Morris was a traveling evangelist staying with her family in Hominy, Oklahoma.

Clemishire, now 55, expressed gratitude for the indictment, stating, “After almost 43 years, the law has finally caught up with Robert Morris.”

Morris, 63, resigned from Gateway Church last year after the allegations surfaced on a religious watchdog blog. He could face up to 20 years in prison per charge if convicted.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond condemned the case, calling Morris’ alleged actions “despicable” for exploiting his position as a pastor.

Morris was not in custody as of Wednesday.
