Larry Hogan, the Republican former Governor of Maryland, has announced his candidacy for the state’s open Senate seat, surprising many who speculated he might pursue a third-party presidential bid. Hogan, known for his bipartisan appeal, emphasized the need for leadership that transcends party lines in his announcement. His decision to enter the race is seen as a significant boost for the Republican chances in the Senate, particularly after the National Republican Senatorial Committee and its Chair, Sen. Steve Daines, strongly encouraged him to run.

Hogan, who served as Maryland’s governor from 2015 to 2023 and left office with a high approval rating, was previously thought to be considering a third-party bid for the presidency. However, his move to vie for outgoing Sen. Ben Cardin’s seat has now shifted the Cook Political Report’s rating of the race from “solid Democrat” to “likely Democrat,” reflecting Hogan’s potential impact on the election’s competitiveness.

Democrats, including Rep. David Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, are also in the race for Cardin’s seat. Despite Hogan’s entry, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee remains confident.
