Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan announced on Monday his decision to support President Biden in the upcoming November election, expressing his disappointment with Republicans who continue to support former President Trump.

In an op-ed published in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Duncan expressed his dismay at the growing number of Republicans supporting Trump. He stated that he had no choice but to back Biden over the presumptive Republican nominee, whom he characterized as a man who has disqualified himself through his conduct and character.

Duncan wrote, “The GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era, leaving conservative (but not angry) Republicans like me no choice but to pull the lever for Biden. At the same time, we should work to elect GOP congressional majorities to block his second-term legislative agenda and provide a check and balance.”

Duncan cited Trump’s New York hush money case and his promotion of unfounded conspiracy theories leading to the events of January 6, 2021, as reasons for his decision not to support him. Duncan, once considered a potential third-party presidential candidate, also criticized Trump and his allies for their involvement in fake elector schemes across the country following the 2020 election.

Addressing arguments from “reluctant Trump supporters” who claim their support for Trump is due to policy differences with Biden or the current sense of chaos at college campuses, Duncan countered that Trump’s final year in office was far from tranquil.

Duncan wrote, “Trump has shown us who he is. We should believe him. To think he is going to change at the age of 77 is beyond improbable.”

In conclusion, Duncan, a lifelong member of the GOP, affirmed his decision to vote for Biden. He stated, “Unlike Trump, I’ve belonged to the GOP my entire life. This November, I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a criminal defendant without a moral compass.”

Duncan, who was previously considered as a potential candidate for No Labels — a political organization that aimed to put forward a bipartisan unity ticket, mentioned that he withdrew his name from consideration for the No Labels ticket in March. Last month, No Labels announced that it would not be pursuing a unity ticket due to its inability to find a suitable candidate.
