David Rivera (R) agreed to a consulting deal for $50 million with Venezuela’s socialist government.

On Monday, he was arrested at Atlanta’s airport in connection with a federal criminal investigation. PDV USA, a Delaware-based affiliate of Venezuelan-owned Citgo, sued his company in 2020, stating the former lawmaker did no work.

Rivera was bailed out of jail Monday afternoon after making his initial appearance in federal court in Atlanta, according to the US Marshals Service.

Rivera has maintained his innocence and has countersued PDV USA for breach of contract and unjust enrichment. His attorney, Jeffrey Feldman, declined to comment, telling The Associated Press that he had “not seen the indictment.”

He failed to register as a foreign lobbyist, which would have necessitated registration with the authorities.
