Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, who resigned this week as head of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said Thursday that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has never been briefed by CDC experts on measles, COVID-19, or influenza.
“No one from my center has ever briefed him on any of those topics,” Daskalakis told CNN, adding that Kennedy appears to rely on “alternate experts” rather than CDC scientists. He said Kennedy has repeatedly declined offers for briefings, despite a measles outbreak infecting hundreds nationwide.
The comments followed Daskalakis’s resignation after the Trump administration fired CDC Director Susan Monarez, citing misalignment with the president’s agenda. In his resignation letter, he warned agency decisions were being driven by politics rather than science.
Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, has drawn criticism for firing immunization committee members and replacing them with figures who promote anti-vaccine views. HHS has not commented on Daskalakis’s claims.
