Former Capitol Police officers who served during the January 6, 2021, insurrection have condemned President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to pardon rioters, describing it as a profound betrayal. “It’s a stab in the heart,” said former Sergeant Aquilino Gonell, who suffered lasting injuries during the riot and later resigned from the force. Gonell reflected on losing his health, career, and friendships due to the attack.
Trump has declared that pardoning those imprisoned for their actions on January 6 will be a top priority after his inauguration, despite criticism from lawmakers, staffers, and police. Former officer Harry Dunn, who also resigned and is now pursuing a congressional seat, said, “They broke the law, attacked us, and claimed they acted in Trump’s name. Pardoning them shows no accountability.”
Both officers aim to preserve the historical record of the attack to honor those affected and prevent future incidents. Gonell shared the ongoing psychological toll, stating, “That place feels unrecognizable because of what happened.”
Senate Republicans have indicated they would not oppose the pardons, potentially allowing Trump to overturn numerous convictions. His inauguration is set for January 20.
