Florida state Rep. Hillary Cassel announced her departure from the Democratic Party, citing dissatisfaction with its handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict and disconnect with average Floridians. Cassel, who assumed office in 2022, has joined the Republican Party, sharing her decision in a letter on X.
“I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values,” Cassel wrote, criticizing the Democrats’ failure to fully support Israel and its tolerance of progressive voices she believes justify terrorism. Cassel also highlighted her belief that Republicans foster greater respect and collaboration.
Republican Speaker Daniel Perez welcomed Cassel, further expanding the GOP’s supermajority in Florida’s House to 87-33. Weeks earlier, Democratic Rep. Susan Valdes also switched parties, expressing frustration over the Democratic Party’s focus on protests rather than progress.
Cassel acknowledged potential disagreements with Republicans but praised their openness and commitment to finding practical solutions for Floridians.
