Florida has become the first state to formally adopt the name “Gulf of America” for the body of water traditionally known as the Gulf of Mexico, following President Donald Trump’s January executive order renaming it.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) signed two bills Monday — one revising Florida law to reflect the new name and another requiring its use in state education materials. “Florida is proud to follow the leadership of President Trump,” said Sen. Nick DiCeglie (R-FL), a sponsor of the legislation.
Florida Senate President Ben Albritton also praised the move, calling it a celebration of “American exceptionalism.”
At the federal level, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has introduced legislation to formalize the name change nationwide, though it has not yet received a vote.
Some agencies and map services have adopted the new name, but others, including the Associated Press, have declined to comply. The White House has reportedly restricted AP journalists’ access following the outlet’s refusal to adopt the terminology.
