Fifteen Senate Democrats supported two failed resolutions led by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) that aimed to block $8.8 billion in offensive weapons sales and military aid to Israel. The measures, opposed by all Republicans, were defeated in votes of 15–82 and 15–83.
The proposals sought to halt military sales originally approved under the Trump administration and renewed during the Biden presidency. The resolutions spotlighted internal Democratic divisions over continued U.S. support for Israel amid its resumed military campaign in Gaza.
Democratic senators voting in favor included Richard Durbin, Martin Heinrich, Mazie Hirono, Ben Ray Luján, Tim Kaine, Andy Kim, Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Brian Schatz, Tina Smith, Chris Van Hollen, Elizabeth Warren, and Peter Welch.
Sanders stated, “The United States must end our complicity in these atrocities.”
Several Democrats up for reelection in 2026, such as Mark Warner and Jon Ossoff, voted against the resolutions, potentially exposing themselves to criticism from progressive challengers.
