The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has confirmed it has sufficient funds to respond to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, countering misinformation that suggested otherwise. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell assured reporters that the agency has the resources needed for immediate disaster response despite concerns over long-term funding.

FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund, which supports search and rescue, emergency shelter, and recovery efforts, currently holds $11 billion after a recent cash boost from Congress. However, experts warn that major disasters can quickly deplete such funds. If needed, FEMA can implement “Immediate Needs Funding,” which redirects money from long-term recovery projects to emergency operations. This has occurred several times and may be necessary again by January without additional congressional funding.

The agency has refuted misinformation, including false claims by former President Trump that FEMA lacks funds due to spending on migrant housing. FEMA clarified that survivors can receive more than the $750 Trump mentioned, only for essential needs like food and water. Survivors may qualify for further aid beyond that amount.
