Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Tuesday that federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel in December.
The decision follows President Donald Trump’s executive order to reinstate and expand use of the federal death penalty, which was paused under the Biden administration.
“Luigi Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America,” Bondi said in a statement. “After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
Thompson’s death drew national attention and prompted renewed debate over capital punishment. His family has not publicly commented on the announcement.
Mangione’s trial has been delayed as his legal team continues to challenge elements of the prosecution’s evidence.
