A federal judge on Tuesday struck down Donald Trump‘s executive order that targeted the prominent law firm WilmerHale for its past association with former special counsel Robert Mueller. The March order accused the firm of employing attorneys who “distort justice” and sought to impose punitive restrictions, including revoking building clearances for staff.

U.S. District Judge Richard Leon, appointed by George W. Bush, called the order a violation of constitutional protections. “The Order shouts through a bullhorn: If you take on causes disfavored by President Trump, you will be punished,” he wrote. His ruling emphasized the importance of an independent legal profession, stating that the administration’s attempt to sanction WilmerHale was “a staggering punishment for the firm’s protected speech!”

This is the third such ruling against the administration this month. The Trump administration has not yet appealed the decisions against WilmerHale, Jenner & Block, and Perkins Coie.
