The latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll reveals that Americans, regardless of party affiliation, fear for the country’s future. However, Democrats and Republicans differ significantly in their concerns and the values they wish to instill in the next generation.

In the upcoming presidential election, the poll identifies significant shifts among key voter groups across generational, racial, and educational lines. The influence of third-party candidates and “double haters” (those disliking both Biden and Trump) on the race is also examined.

The poll also notes an increase in Republicans believing Trump has acted unethically amidst his ongoing legal issues. Despite this, less than half of the respondents are closely following Trump’s New York hush money trial.

Democrats prioritize teaching the “Golden Rule” and worry about rising extremism and fascism. Republicans emphasize faith in God, hard work, discipline, and fear a loss of values and national weakness.

The presidential race remains close, with shifts in voter preferences since 2020. Biden now leads among older voters, a group Trump won in 2020. However, Biden’s advantage among younger voters has diminished. Racial and educational lines also show shifts, with Biden’s lead halving among nonwhite voters but improving slightly among white voters, particularly those college-educated.
