Dr. Peter Marks, the top vaccine official at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), resigned Friday, citing a breakdown in scientific integrity under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

“It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary,” Marks wrote in his resignation letter, accusing Kennedy of favoring “misinformation and lies.”

Marks, known for his leadership during Operation Warp Speed in the first Trump administration, warned of rising anti-vaccine sentiment, particularly as a measles outbreak in Texas has reached at least 400 cases.

“Undermining confidence in well-established vaccines… is irresponsible, detrimental to public health, and a clear danger to our nation’s health, safety, and security,” he wrote.

An HHS official responded that if Marks “does not want to get behind restoring science to its golden standard and promoting radical transparency,” he had no place at FDA.

Public health leaders expressed disappointment. “Peter Marks is one of the most brilliant, dedicated scientists and public servants,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, former White House COVID-19 coordinator.

Marks concluded, “I leave with a heavy heart,” urging an end to the “assault on scientific truth.”
