The latest FBI crime statistics reveal a 3% decrease in violent crime nationwide last year, including an 11.6% drop in murder and non-negligent manslaughter—the largest such decline in decades. Reported rapes also fell significantly, dropping 9.4%, while property crime decreased by 2.4%.
These declines come as GOP candidates, including former President Trump, have focused on crime as a key campaign issue, often suggesting a surge in violent crime. However, the FBI’s data shows that crime levels have been steadily declining since the initial spike during the COVID-19 pandemic and remain significantly lower than in the 1990s.
Despite the overall drop, some crime categories did rise, with auto theft increasing by 12.6% and hate crimes rising nearly 2%. FBI crime data covers over 94% of the U.S. population, although not all cities contribute to the report.
