Nearly four years after pipe bombs were planted outside the Democratic and Republican Party headquarters in Washington, D.C., the FBI has released new details and footage of the suspect. A Republican-led congressional panel criticized the FBI for failing to identify the suspect, calling it a “failure.” Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund testified in 2021 that the bombs, planted on Jan. 5, 2021, might have been intended as a diversion to redirect law enforcement resources during the Jan. 6 riot, though investigators have not confirmed this theory.

The FBI revealed that the suspect is estimated to be about 5 feet 7 inches tall, with their gender still undetermined. Newly released footage shows the suspect leaving a bomb outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The video also notes that the suspect wore distinctive Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, with fewer than 25,000 pairs sold between August 2018 and January 2021.

David Sundberg of the FBI stated that the investigation has assessed more than 600 tips and conducted over 1,000 interviews, but these efforts have yet to identify the suspect. A report from the Committee on House Administration’s oversight panel pointed out that early investigations produced promising leads, but progress stalled as resources were diverted. The report criticized the lack of significant advancements in apprehending the suspect.
