The FBI has expanded its investigation into racist and threatening text messages initially targeting Black communities to include Hispanic and LGBTQ+ groups, as well as high school students. The messages, sent via text and email, vary in language but include references to slavery, deportation threats, and re-education camps.

While no violent acts have been reported, the FBI stated it is working with the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division to evaluate all incidents. Southern Poverty Law Center President Margaret Huang criticized the messages as hateful and racist, while NAACP President Derrick Johnson attributed the emboldening of such behavior to rhetoric from President-elect Trump’s campaign.

Trump’s transition team denied involvement, with spokesperson Steven Cheung stating the campaign has no connection to the messages. The FBI encouraged recipients to report the threats.
