Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s FBI director nominee, stated during his confirmation hearing that he opposed clemency for Jan. 6 rioters who attacked law enforcement. Questioned by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Patel affirmed his rejection of violence against police and distanced himself from Trump’s pardons.
Patel, a former Department of Defense official and Trump ally, previously helped expose flaws in the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation. Despite controversy over his background, even centrist Republicans, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), have expressed support.
At the hearing, Patel emphasized his commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring transparency. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) welcomed his nomination, citing declining public trust in the FBI. “Either you run the agency, or the agency runs you,” Grassley warned Patel, referencing former FBI Director Christopher Wray.
