Federal agents and Montgomery County police executed a raid Friday morning at the Bethesda home of John Bolton, former national security adviser under President Donald Trump. Police confirmed they were supporting the FBI, and the street was sealed off as agents arrived around 7:00 a.m.
Lawfare’s Ben Wittes livestreamed from the scene, while the New York Post published photos from inside the perimeter minutes after the operation began.
Bolton, who resigned in 2019 after a turbulent tenure, had faced legal battles over his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened.” Trump’s Justice Department sought to block publication, seize profits, and even considered criminal charges, alleging Bolton revealed classified information. A grand jury probe was opened in 2020 but dropped by the Biden administration in 2021.
The raid raises questions about whether the case has been revived, as the statute of limitations on unauthorized disclosure of classified material is five years. Bolton’s security clearance was revoked in January 2025, and his protection detail withdrawn despite past Iranian threats.
Kash Patel, now FBI director, posted a cryptic message on X minutes after the raid began.
