According to the latest FBI report, hate crimes in the US surged to a 20-year high in 2021, increasing by 116%. This marks the largest single-year increase ever recorded. The report highlights that hate crimes against Asian Americans rose by 73%, with 4,050 incidents reported, following the pandemic’s outbreak. Hate crimes targeting Black Americans also increased by 40%. Furthermore, religious and LGBTQ communities also saw a surge in hate crimes, with incidents targeting Jewish and Muslim communities rising by 42% and 47%, respectively.
The FBI report echoes similar findings in a study by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, which showed that hate crimes increased by 35% in 2020 in 18 major US cities. Activists are calling for increased efforts to address the root causes of hate crimes, such as education and greater access to mental health resources. They also urge law enforcement agencies to strengthen their efforts to monitor and investigate hate crimes.
