The FBI has fired agents who were photographed kneeling during racial justice protests in Washington following the 2020 killing of George Floyd, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Roughly 20 agents were dismissed, the sources told the Associated Press, after initially being reassigned last spring. The photos showed them taking a knee during demonstrations that erupted nationwide after Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police officers.

The move is part of a broader personnel purge under FBI Director Kash Patel. Last month, five agents and senior officials were summarily fired, including Steve Jensen, who oversaw Jan. 6 investigations, and Brian Driscoll, who had resisted Justice Department demands to disclose agents’ names tied to those probes.

Some of the ousted employees have filed lawsuits alleging the firings were politically driven and ordered by the White House. Patel has denied that claim, insisting that those dismissed “failed to meet the FBI’s standards.”

An FBI spokesperson declined to comment on the reported terminations.
