FBI Director Kash Patel has instructed bureau employees not to respond to an email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) demanding weekly accomplishment reports—a directive pushed by tech billionaire Elon Musk, who leads President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In a memo obtained by NewsNation, Patel told FBI personnel that the agency would handle all responses internally. “The FBI, through the Office of the Director, is in charge of all of our review processes and will conduct reviews in accordance with FBI procedures,” Patel wrote.
Patel isn’t alone in resisting Musk’s initiative, which requires federal workers to submit five bullet points detailing their weekly achievements or risk being considered resigned. The Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence community have all told employees to hold off on responding. State Department official Tibor Nagy reassured staff that “no employee is obligated to report their activities outside of their Department chain of command.” Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard gave similar guidance to intelligence agencies.
Meanwhile, federal employee unions have denounced the requirement, calling it an intimidation tactic. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) demanded OPM rescind the email and apologize. Despite the pushback, some agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, have confirmed the email’s legitimacy and instructed employees to comply.
