FBI Director Kash Patel has ended the bureau’s long-standing partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a civil rights organization that has historically worked with law enforcement to combat antisemitism and extremism.

Patel announced the decision on social media Wednesday, writing that “this FBI won’t partner with political fronts masquerading as watchdogs.” He cited former FBI Director James Comey’s past praise of the ADL, calling them “love letters,” and said that era is over. His remarks came on the eve of Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish calendar.

The move follows recent backlash from conservatives, including Elon Musk and Donald Trump Jr., over the ADL’s “Glossary of Extremism.” That resource had included references to the Christian Identity movement and Turning Point USA, founded by slain activist Charlie Kirk. The ADL has since removed several entries, saying some were “outdated” and misrepresented.

In a statement, the ADL said it maintains “deep respect” for the FBI and remains committed to protecting Jewish communities amid rising antisemitism. The group has long conducted workshops and training with local, state, and federal agencies on hate crimes and extremist threats.
