Washington, D.C. — FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino sharply criticized Rep. Thomas Massie on Thursday after the Kentucky Republican suggested the bureau was targeting an FBI whistleblower involved in the investigation of the Jan. 6 pipe bombs. Massie posted a letter from the whistleblower’s attorney warning of possible retaliation for disclosures made to Congress, prompting Bongino’s public response.

Massie said the correspondence referenced a Thursday morning meeting at the FBI’s Washington Field Office where bureau leadership was allegedly trying to identify the whistleblower. Bongino rejected that claim, saying he had personally offered Massie an in-person briefing and accused the congressman of choosing to “tweet and throw BS bombs.”

Bongino said the meeting Massie referenced would proceed but insisted its purpose was to review whistleblower resources that could be relevant to potential misconduct within the Biden administration’s investigation. He also said FBI leadership remains “passionate” about solving the unsolved 2021 pipe bomb case.

The bombs, placed outside the DNC and RNC headquarters on Jan. 5, 2021, did not detonate, but investigators say they were viable devices. The FBI renewed its public call for tips last month, offering a $500,000 reward. Nearly five years later, the suspect’s identity remains unknown.

Massie has promoted unverified reports claiming a former Capitol Police officer may be linked to the bombs, fueling accusations of an FBI “cover-up.” Bongino called those reports “grossly inaccurate” and said no breakthrough has been made.

“I proudly serve in this administration,” he said, adding that he hopes Massie will work with the bureau rather than act like a “dog barking behind a fence.”
