Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former lead adviser for the government’s COVID-19 response, refuted GOP accusations of orchestrating a cover-up of the virus’s origins during a tense House Select Subcommittee hearing on the Coronavirus Pandemic. Fauci dismissed the claims as “absolutely false and simply preposterous,” criticizing Republicans for misrepresenting his emails about the lab leak theory.

Fauci, who retired as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2022, emphasized his dedication to identifying and combating infectious diseases, stating, “It is inconceivable that anyone who reads this email could conclude that I was trying to cover up the possibility of a laboratory leak.”

The panel’s Republicans, despite lacking evidence, highlighted funding from Fauci’s agency to EcoHealth Alliance for research in Wuhan, China. They also scrutinized a senior official under Fauci for allegedly evading records-keeping laws. Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) accused Fauci of allowing his office to flout the law, a claim Fauci denied, expressing ignorance of the violations and condemning the official’s actions.

Democrats, including Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.), defended Fauci, stating, “After 15 months, the select subcommittee does not possess a shred of evidence to substantiate these extreme allegations.”

Despite the continued focus on the lab leak theory by some, most scientists support the natural origin theory. Fauci reiterated this stance, noting his inclination towards a natural occurrence based on extensive scientific research.
