Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday reiterated warnings about the more infectious delta variant of the coronavirus, which he said has doubled in prevalence in the U.S. in the past couple of weeks, threatening areas of the country with low vaccination rates.

Speaking at a White House Covid-19 task force briefing about the U.S.’s vaccination progress, Fauci, who serves as President Biden’s chief medical advisor, said the delta variant now makes up 20% of all new coronavirus cases in the U.S.

This is roughly double its prevalence of 9.9% two weeks ago, signaling the mutant strain is circulating with a “doubling time of about two weeks,” Fauci said.
