Farmers and environmental groups have sued the Trump administration, challenging its decision to freeze grants under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which funds renewable energy and efficiency upgrades for farms.
The lawsuit targets the suspension of a $300 million program that helps farmers install solar panels and energy-efficient systems. Plaintiffs argue they have already spent money on purchases and contracts they can no longer afford without the promised funding.
Two farms, Butterbee Farm and One Acre Farm, say they completed solar projects expecting tens of thousands of dollars in grants, but now must cover those costs themselves. Their lawsuit warns the unexpected financial burden threatens their long-term survival.
The grant freeze stems from a January White House directive, which paused IRA funds supporting climate and energy projects. The move has disrupted numerous programs, leaving recipients without anticipated federal aid.
