The family of Ruby Garcia, a Grand Rapids woman who was murdered, expressed dismay and annoyance at former President Donald Trump’s remarks on immigration, where he cited Garcia’s death. Trump is accused of politicizing the tragedy, despite claims of not having communicated with the Garcia family. During an immigration policy speech, Trump referred to the murder of Ruby Garcia by Brandon Ortiz-Vite, a 25-year-old Mexican citizen who entered the U.S. illegally and confessed to killing Garcia after an argument. Trump described Ruby as an exceptional young woman, known for her contagious laughter, based on accounts from people he claimed to have spoken to, including purported family members.

Ruby’s sister, Mavi Garcia, countered Trump’s assertion, stating that the former president had not contacted their family and expressed her disturbance over the politicization of her sister’s death. Alongside Garcia’s case, Trump mentioned other incidents involving immigrants in crimes, framing them as part of a broader “border bloodbath” narrative. He emphasized that such issues would cease upon his potential return to office. The focus on immigration has reportedly given Trump an edge over Biden among Michigan voters concerned with illegal border crossings.
