The family of a passenger killed in the January 29 midair collision near Reagan Washington National Airport has taken legal action against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Army, seeking $250 million in damages.
The crash involved American Airlines flight 532, which collided with an Army Black Hawk helicopter during a training exercise, sending both aircraft into the Potomac River. All 67 people aboard the commercial flight and three service members in the helicopter were killed.
The family of Casey Crafton, an aviation specialist who was aboard the flight, has hired Clifford Law Offices to file a Form 95, the first step in a lawsuit under the Federal Tort Claims Act. Attorney Bob Clifford cited possible “willful neglect” by federal agencies overseeing airspace near the airport.
The FAA declined to comment, while the Army has not yet responded. The lawsuit could move forward in six months if the government does not settle the claim.
