Ahead of the upcoming U.S. election, experts caution that political violence remains a significant concern, despite the reduced public activity of far-right groups involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. Following the storming of the Capitol, many supporters of groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers have faced legal repercussions, leading to diminished organization among these groups.

Authorities, however, remain on high alert. Recent incidents, including ballot drop-box fires in Oregon and Washington, are under FBI investigation. American University extremism expert Kurt Braddock and others warn that threats are difficult to predict as many extremist activities may now occur in encrypted channels. Experts also note the rise in anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant rhetoric, amplified by figures including Donald Trump, whose public statements have inspired some extremists.

Polling from the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that 40% of voters are “extremely” or “very” concerned about potential violence aimed at overturning election results.
