Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh announced he has joined the Democratic Party, five years after leaving the Republican Party and becoming an Independent. In a Substack post, Walsh wrote, “Three words I never thought I’d ever utter: I’m a Democrat,” citing his opposition to Donald Trump as a key reason.

Though he still considers himself a conservative on issues like gun rights, border security, and limited government, Walsh said he’s gained a broader perspective on social justice, LGBTQ rights, climate change, and immigration through listening to people with differing views.

Walsh represented an Illinois district in Congress from 2011 to 2013 during the Tea Party wave. He supported Trump early on but became a vocal critic during Trump’s presidency, even challenging him in the 2020 GOP primary. He later endorsed Joe Biden and left the Republican Party.

Calling Trump “the worst of us,” Walsh said he believes only Democrats currently uphold values like empathy, decency, and tolerance.
