European and NATO leaders will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday for talks with President Donald Trump aimed at ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. The move comes after Zelenskyy was excluded from Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Leaders from France, Britain, Germany, and the European Commission, as well as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, confirmed their attendance. Their presence is seen as a bid to bolster Zelenskyy’s position and prevent Trump from pressuring Ukraine into a one-sided deal.
“The Europeans are very afraid of the Oval Office scene being repeated,” said retired French Gen. Dominique Trinquand, referencing a February clash between Trump and Zelenskyy. “It’s a power struggle and a position of strength that might work with Trump.”
European leaders say they want security guarantees for Ukraine and to resist Putin’s push to block Ukraine from NATO or EU membership. Trump has emphasized the need for a “full peace deal,” while Russia has warned that Europe could create “obstacles” to progress.
Analysts caution that with so many leaders present, the risk is sending “contradictory” signals. Still, their attendance underscores Europe’s determination to shape Ukraine’s future.
