French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot affirmed the EU’s unity against President-elect Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, owned by Denmark but self-governed. Barrot emphasized the need for Europe to protect itself from such “threats of interference” but dismissed the likelihood of a U.S. invasion.
Trump has labeled Greenland acquisition a “national security necessity,” suggesting military force if necessary. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede firmly rejected the idea, stating, “Greenland is ours… we are not for sale.” Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and other EU leaders echoed Egede’s stance.
This follows Trump’s broader territorial ambitions, including annexing Canada or reacquiring the Panama Canal. Barrot warned of a global shift towards “survival of the fittest.”
Trump’s rhetoric has drawn criticism across Europe, with leaders urging vigilance against U.S. overreach while maintaining diplomatic caution. The BBC and The Guardian first reported Greenland’s response.
