A coalition of environmental organizations filed suit Friday to block the Trump administration’s planned migrant detention facility in the Florida Everglades, criticizing the project’s environmental risks and lack of regulatory review. Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” by critics, the proposed center would house up to 5,000 migrants at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, near Big Cypress National Preserve.

“This massive detention center will blight one of the most iconic ecosystems in the world,” said Elise Bennett of the Center for Biological Diversity, warning it threatens endangered species like the Florida panther and risks water contamination.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier defended the site’s remote location as a natural barrier, calling it a “low-cost” solution. “If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons,” he said.

The lawsuit alleges violations of the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, and other laws due to a lack of environmental reviews and public input. The $450 million project would be funded through FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program.
