The Donald Trump administration canceled nearly $4 billion in clean energy grants Friday, targeting 24 major projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the decision ensures “responsible” spending after reviewing awards from President Joe Biden’s final months, many tied to carbon capture and clean manufacturing.
Canceled grants include $500 million to Heidelberg Materials, $375 million to Eastman Chemical, and $87 million to Sublime Systems, which said it was “surprised and disappointed.” The cuts follow a broader Department of Energy review of 179 clean energy projects totaling $15 billion.
Industry and environmental advocates blasted the decision. Jessie Stolark of the Carbon Capture Coalition called it “a major step backward,” while the Clean Air Task Force warned it “undercuts U.S. competitiveness.” Critics say the cuts undermine energy independence and climate goals, while rewarding fossil fuel interests.
The Trump administration has rolled back Biden-era climate efforts and increased support for oil and gas under its “energy dominance” agenda, despite global momentum behind clean technology.
