The Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have rehired probationary employees who were laid off last month, following court rulings that deemed the firings illegal.

The workers will remain on paid administrative leave while lawsuits over their dismissals continue.

  • DOE employees received letters Monday stating they were reinstated with backdated administrative leave.
  • EPA reinstated 419 employees, according to an agency statement.
  • NOAA rehired staff fired on Feb. 27, affecting National Weather Service operations, including weather balloon launches critical for forecasting.

The layoffs were ordered by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) under Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, two recent court rulings forced agencies to reverse course.

Despite this move, further cuts are expected, as federal agencies pursue workforce reductions of 20% to 50%. The legal battle continues, and some employees could face re-dismissal if appeals succeed.
