The Democratic organization End Citizens United filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday, alleging that former President Trump’s interview with Elon Musk on X, the platform Musk owns, violated campaign finance laws. The complaint claims that the interview, held on Monday night, amounted to an illegal corporate contribution to Trump’s campaign.
End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller stated, “The Donald Trump-Elon Musk campaign rally hosted on X…was a blatantly illegal corporate contribution to Donald Trump’s campaign.” The complaint argues that the conversation served as a virtual campaign event for Trump, financed by X.
Federal campaign finance law prohibits corporations from making contributions to federal candidates, and the complaint contends that X’s resources, including staff and Musk’s participation, were of significant value to Trump’s campaign. The organization also dismissed the possibility of a media exemption, arguing that X’s support was not protected under this provision.
