Emails obtained by The New York Times between JD Vance and his former Yale classmate Sofia Nelson reveal a different ideological stance from Vance before his political alignment with Donald Trump. In correspondence from 2014 to 2017, Vance criticized Trump, calling him a “morally reprehensible human being,” and expressed negative views on law enforcement following the 2014 killing of Michael Brown. Vance supported body cameras for police and shared his frustration with law enforcement’s treatment of minorities.
In 2016, Vance likened Trump’s rhetoric to that of a demagogue exploiting people’s beliefs, and even compared Trump to “America’s Hitler” in a text to another classmate. However, Vance’s stance shifted when he ran for Senate in 2021, aligning with Trump’s views on election fraud and expressing regret for his past criticisms. By April 2022, Trump endorsed Vance, despite acknowledging Vance’s previous negative remarks about him.
Luke Schroeder, a spokesperson for Vance, acknowledged the evolution of Vance’s views, attributing the changes to his personal growth and family life.
