Tech billionaire Elon Musk took the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday wielding a chainsaw, symbolizing his efforts to slash the federal budget and workforce as head of President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Dressed in a Make America Great Again hat, sunglasses, and chain, Musk was joined by Argentine President Javier Milei, who handed him a black chainsaw. Holding it up, Musk declared, “This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy,” echoing Milei’s signature use of a chainsaw at political events to emphasize government downsizing.

Musk and DOGE have spearheaded mass layoffs, agency closures, and major budget reductions, drawing sharp criticism and multiple lawsuits over access to federal databases and personnel decisions. Despite the backlash, DOGE claims to have found $55 billion in savings, including $6.5 billion by dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The administration’s buyout program has also led 75,000 federal workers to accept voluntary resignations as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures.
