Elon Musk has taken to social media to recruit retired air traffic controllers, responding to ongoing staffing shortages and recent aviation safety concerns.

In a post on X, Musk wrote, “There is a shortage of top-notch air traffic controllers. If you have retired, but are open to returning to work, please consider doing so.”

The effort follows Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy’s recent announcement that the federal government will offer air traffic controllers the opportunity to work beyond their mandatory retirement age of 56. The initiative comes after a deadly collision over the Potomac River, which killed 67 people and was the worst U.S. air disaster in over two decades.

Musk’s personal involvement raises questions about his role in government workforce decisions, particularly as he leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in its sweeping federal job cuts. The FAA has struggled to fill controller positions, and safety concerns have intensified under Trump’s cost-cutting measures.

Neither Musk nor the White House has clarified whether his online recruitment is an official or private initiative to address the shortage.
