Elon Musk is stepping down from his role in the Trump administration after serving as a special adviser in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The announcement came just one day after Musk sharply criticized Donald Trump‘s “big beautiful bill,” calling it a deficit-bloating measure that undermines DOGE’s mission.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X. His departure was confirmed by a White House official.

Musk, who previously said he was overextended in politics, plans to refocus on his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. His exit follows backlash and boycotts tied to his work with the administration. Tesla shares rose after he announced he would step back.

The DOGE office had hoped to identify $1 trillion in federal cuts, but Musk now admits the bureaucracy proved more resistant than expected. While Trump praised Musk as “a truly great American,” tensions flared over the president’s signature legislation, prompting Musk to speak out just before his scheduled departure.
