Elon Musk, tech billionaire and White House adviser, voiced concern Friday over the Trump administration’s proposed cuts to NASA’s budget, calling the move “troubling” in a post on X.
Musk, CEO of SpaceX and head of the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency, clarified he cannot participate in NASA budget discussions due to his company’s contracts with the agency. His post responded to an Ars Technica article revealing that the administration plans to cut NASA’s science programs nearly in half—from $7.5 billion in 2025 to $3.9 billion in the next fiscal year.
While the administration’s broader draft budget proposes a 20% cut to NASA overall, the deepest reductions target science and research programs.
Musk has been a prominent figure in the Trump administration since backing the president during the 2024 election, but questions persist about his future in the White House. At a recent Cabinet meeting, Trump praised Musk but downplayed his role, saying, “I don’t need Elon for anything other than I happen to like him.”
