Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced he will commit $45 million per month to a new political action committee backing former President Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The announcement coincides with Trump being named the Republican Party’s official nominee and his selection of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate.

America PAC will focus on voter outreach and registration efforts to counter Democrats’ traditionally strong campaigns. Other notable backers include the Winklevoss twins, tech entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale, and former ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and her husband, coal executive Joe Craft.

Musk’s commitment, potentially amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, would be one of the largest donations of the 2024 presidential campaign. Musk, worth about $252 billion, leads Tesla, SpaceX, and social media platform X.

America PAC, established in May and registered in Texas, raised $8.75 million in the second quarter and has just under $100,000 cash on hand as of the end of June. Musk’s contributions will begin this month, marking a shift from his previous promise to stay out of the 2024 election. He endorsed Trump shortly after the former president survived an attempted assassination.
