A Pew Research Center survey reveals that while a majority of Americans (58%) are closely following the 2024 presidential election news, many express fatigue with the extensive coverage. The survey, conducted from April 8 to 14, 2024, involved 8,709 U.S. adults from the Center’s American Trends Panel.

The interest in election news has slightly increased from April 2020, with Republicans and older adults more engaged than Democrats and younger voters. However, 62% of respondents feel overwhelmed by the campaign coverage, a sentiment consistent with previous election cycles.

Most Americans encounter political news passively (57%), with significant age-related differences in news-seeking behavior. Traditional journalists and news organizations remain the primary source of political information for 62% of adults, with younger Americans more inclined to rely on social media personalities and personal connections.

The survey’s methodology ensures a representative demographic mix, reflecting the diverse opinions and habits of the U.S. electorate. Pew Research Center, supported by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, continues to explore the evolving landscape of news consumption and its impact on the public.
