Eight in 10 Americans are worried about the country spiraling out of control following an assassination attempt on former President Trump, according to a Reuters/Ipsos survey released Wednesday. The poll, conducted after a gunman opened fire at Trump’s campaign stop in Butler, Pa., on Saturday, found that 80% of registered voters are concerned about political violence, regardless of party affiliation.
The 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired multiple shots, grazing Trump’s ear. Crooks and an attendee were killed, while two others were critically injured. Trump, protected by Secret Service agents, raised a fist and was heard saying “Fight!” before being rushed offstage.
The survey also revealed that 84% of voters fear extremists might resort to violence after the upcoming election if dissatisfied with the outcome. This includes 90% of Democrats, 77% of Republicans, and 81% of independents.
The survey, conducted on July 16 among 1,202 people, has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.
