The latest Infinite Dial report by Edison Research, which surveys over 1,000 U.S. residents aged 12 and older, indicates a 30% decline in the usage of X (formerly Twitter). This decrease mirrors trends noted by other third-party analyses, such as Apptopia’s observation of a 13% drop in daily active users and SimilarWeb’s report of a 14% fall in mobile and web visits since September 2022. Additionally, AppAnnie and Sensor Tower have reported significant declines in X’s user engagement over the past year.
Despite these reports, X maintains that its daily active user count remains steady at 250 million, a figure unchanged since November 2022, when Elon Musk assumed leadership. This stagnation contrasts sharply with third-party data, raising concerns about the platform’s growth prospects under Musk’s stewardship.
The downturn in usage has implications for advertisers, suggesting a reevaluation of X as a viable platform for reaching target audiences. While X’s ad revenue has plummeted by approximately 60% since Musk’s takeover, there’s an indication of a slow return of advertisers to the platform.
The Infinite Dial report also reflects on broader social media trends since 2007, noting significant shifts in platform popularity and user engagement.
